Have you wanted to use energy efficient, cost saving compact fluorescent light bulbs but haven’t because of not being able to recycle them? Fear no more. Starting September first, Southern Pine Electric will recycle standard compact fluorescent light bulbs free of charge for our members.
Southern Pine Electric is providing this service so our members can protect the environment while receiving the benefits of being energy efficient. Since 2006, over 300 million CFL’s have been purchased in the United States. While the bulbs save money, they also pose hazards to the environment. CFL’s contain small amounts of mercury which is considered hazardous waste by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Over time they can cause damage to the environment. Unfortunately, most bulbs are discarded in the trash where they can release mercury vapor. This harms the environment, animals and you. This is why we have teamed up with a national recycling company called, Next Level for Recycling, to bring CFL recycling to you.
NLR is a company out of Connecticut that uses state of the art recycling technology. NLR can recycle up to 5,000 lamps per hour. They also have the ability to reclaim glass, phosphor powder and metal from the bulbs. This is reused in a number of industries. Nothing is put to waste.
So what do you do?
First, collect your used CFL’s. If the bulb is already broken please put the contents in a sealed plastic bag. Next, bring your used bulbs to any Southern Pine Electric office and deposit them into the recycling bin located in the lobby. We also will provide bags for you to put your used bulbs into to further insure that they will not harm the environment while on their way to the recycling center.
Southern Pine Electric is only able to recycle standard household CFLs and will not be accepting fluorescent light tubes. If you have further questions please contact us at 601-785-2000.
